Judge Rules IN FAVOR of Commercial Drone Pilot
"I view the decision as a victory for technology," said Mr. Schulman, a New York-based attorney with Kramer Levin Naftalis & Frankel LLP and a recreational drone user. "For seven years our federal government has told business people and entrepreneurs that they must stop using drones for commercial purposes, and I think that's had a very negative effect on this really exciting emerging high-tech industry."
Where does the line get drawn especially if it's a hobbyist who loves to fly helis, quads and planes who discovered that they could make awesome videos when attaching a GoPro HERO3+, iPhone or any other camera? We aren't talking about Predator UAVs here but simple quadcopters such as DJI Phantom or the just released DJI Phantom 2 Vision+.
In any case, commercial drone laws aren't slated to be finalized until 2015 so until then, fly safely but more so, responsibly. Hey, let's start doing more real estate videos too!

PSA: Change and Secure ALL Your Passwords NOW
With the recent security flaw in OpenSSL, now dubbed the Heartbleed bug, every major website is alerting you the change your passwords. Just this morning alone, I'm sure that most of you will have to go about and I advise that you do so now, change your Facebook, Google, Yahoo, Tumblr, GoDaddy, Dropbox and Soundcloud passwords just to name a few. Do it now and make sure that no two are alike! Lucky for me, I use AgileBits's 1Password which, by the way, is now multiple platform, so generating that 8-16 or even 24 character password is automatic. If you haven't read the various sites that are listing the vulnerable web services, I suggest your head over to either here, here or the master list and start working!
3 things you can do to protect yourself Wait for an official announcement from any secure website or service that you normally use regarding a security update.
After you've confirmed that the site or service has installed a security update, change your passwords.
For at least the next week, keep an eye on any of your sensitive online accounts (banking, webmail) for suspicious activity.
In the meantime, while websites are installing the latest version of OpenSSL to fix the bug, it would be a good idea to wait for confirmed updates on your favorite websites and services and then change your password, just to be as safe as possible.

Major Airlines Creating Their Own Pilot Shortages
This is one of the most comprehensive views on the current state of the airlines in the United States. Read the article in its entirety. I'm living it along with some of my best friends and it's getting rather ugly.
The nation's big airlines want you to know that there's a dreadful pilot shortage and they apologize profusely if their commuter-carrier partners cancel flights to your hometown airport due to the debilitating shortfall.
The nation's big airlines don't want you to know that their commuter carriers, which operate half of all the nation's commercial flights, often pay pilots so little that it's often financially wiser to drive a truck or flip fast-food burgers than fly a plane.
A first-year co-pilot at a commuter airline may earn as little as $19 per flying hour. After five years with a commuter airline, the average salary is just $40 an hour. For the lowest-paid pilots at a carrier such as Mesa Air Group, which operates flights for both United and US Airways, a 60-hour work week means an effective pay rate of just $8.50 an hour. That's barely above the national minimum wage of $7.25 an hour and below the more than 10 bucks President Barack Obama is making federal contractors pay their workers.
At American Airlines, senior management that came from US Airways to run AA netted $79 million in stock sales during the last month. At the same time, however, American pressed for another concessionary contract at American Eagle, its wholly owned commuter airline.
Inside a Wall Street Dinner
From the inside it rains foie gras and rack of lamb. These are the people our government now depends on and bails out during time of crisis'. Don't get me wrong, I have no personal qualms, but that's just how it is these days. Below is just an excerpt but you can read Kevin Roose's new book, "Young Money: Inside the Hidden World of Wall Street's Post-Crash Recruits" out today on Kindle or Hardback for more juicy tidbits.
The last thought I had, and the saddest, was that many of these self-righteous Kappa Beta Phi members had surely been first-year bankers once. And in the 20, 30, or 40 years since, something fundamental about them had changed. Their pursuit of money and power had removed them from the larger world to the sad extent that, now, in the primes of their careers, the only people with whom they could be truly themselves were a handful of other prominent financiers.
Perhaps, I realized, this social isolation is why despite extraordinary evidence to the contrary, one-percenters like Ross keep saying how badly persecuted they are. When you’re a member of the fraternity of money, it can be hard to see past the foie gras to the real world.
Here's a full list of all Kappa Beta Phi members as well that was just published two days ago.

100 Best Breweries…San Diego Representing!
The list of top brewers in the World recently debuted for 2014 at ratebeer.com and there are 16 alone in California. Even better, five are right in my very own backyard including the #1 rated brewer which I have yet to try! Three specifically are listed in San Diego while the other two are listed as Alpine and Escondido which I also consider San Diego County. I've taken the liberty to list them along with their most popular brews, in alphabetical order, down below. Did you brewer or beer make the list?
- AleSmith Brewing *Rated #1 Overall out of 100 / Speedway Stout
- Alpine Beer Company / Pure Hoppiness
- Ballast Point / Sculpin IPA
- Green Flash Brewing Company / West Coast IPA
- Stone Brewing Company / Arrogant Bastard Ale
If you haven't done so yourself, check out the Stone Brewing Company pictures that I posted a while back at their new flagship restaurant in Pt. Loma, San Diego. It's over 11,000 square feet and is definitely a gorgeous location for any event.
I'll admit that I'm not a big fan of overly hoppy but that's just me. If you haven't read it yet, there's a great article from a few months back that talks about the west coast polarization towards more and more hops. You can read that here. What are your favorites beers? I'm still a Chimay Blue Grand Reserve kind of guy.
Make Sure You Read AT&T's Fine Print
Announcing a new family plan on the Saturday before the Superbowl, AT&T is trying to lure new and old customers to their service by offering $130 for two smartphones, unlimited talk and text + 10GB shared data. Don't fall for it and make sure to read the fine print. They are still forcing you to pay a lot more money and if you haven't been following, I've been throttled on my unlimited data plan for almost two weeks at speeds at or below .50Mbps.
But then there’s the fine print with the new family plan. Customers who are brand-new to AT&T either have to sign up for AT&T’s Next program, which allows the customer to spread payments of the device over up to 26 months; bring their own device; or pay for the full price of the phone. For example, for the cheapest iPhone 5S, a customer can pay the full $650 for the phone, or pay $25 a month for 26 months on top of the cost of the new family plan, or bring his or her own iPhone 5S (assuming it is compatible with AT&T’s network).
Verizon Edge: Still Scamming You Twice
Seriously, if you really want or need that new phone, just buy it; don't subsidize it. Or if you really must, use your credit card but don't think Verizon's newer Edge plan is better. It's still awful.
As noticed by CNET and confirmed on Verizon's site, the carrier has made a tweak to Edge that does let customers using it upgrade even more frequently if they're so inclined — now, instead of waiting for six months to trade your phone in and get a new one, you can do so after just 30 days. Of course, you're still responsible for paying off half the retail cost on the phone, which means you won't save much money with this new plan. The earlier you upgrade, the less time you're paying Verizon two phone subsidies (the monthly Edge payment as well as the phone payment already built in to your contract) — but it's still not a good deal, just a less bad one.
However, Verizon subscribers who wants to upgrade their phones whenever they want are probably better off just buying phones at their full retail cost — you control exactly when you buy a new phone, and you get to keep or sell them afterwards rather than give them back in to Verizon.
Spotify or Pandora and Introducing Beats Music
With the impending January 21st release of the subscription only Beats Music, I'm thinking two things: 1: why on earth do we need another music streaming service and 2: with Spotify announcing unlimited ad-supported service just yesterday, why would I want to pay $9.99 a month?1 I'll admit, I do like Beats Music "Madlibs" type playlist creation and the interface does looks pretty slick. Since they have a free trial I'll give them a shot. As a small bonus, apparently because I'm an AT&T wireless subscriber, I have the opportunity to get 90 days free on the family plan! After that, it's $14.99 a month and I already know that I'm 90% NOT going to pay. I'm all about equal opportunity and trying out new services, but both the free Pandora or Spotify options don't have me wanting to spend money.
Unrelated, my wife and I are REALLY contemplating unplugging our television services later this year. Time to hunker down right and spend money wisely. Too bad turntable.fm didn't last and what the heck HBO? Why can't you detach yourself from a cable subscription already?!
In our experience it’s always been a living, breathing human who has brought us that song we fell in love with. The song you couldn’t stop playing over and over. The album you deemed a headphone masterpiece. The mix tape that made you think “I’m gonna marry this one.” We tried to remember a time a robot found us magic but all we could find were the times the robot made us laugh: “You like Pantera? Have you heard of Black Sabbath?” “You like Mumford and Sons? Here’s another song with banjos!”
We wanted to build a service that was more than a server, one that was truly of service to the listener. We wanted to combine the trust that comes from excellent hand-picked music with the personalization that knows you’re an individual and that a handful of stations can’t satisfy all listeners.
If you want to be transported somewhere else, try RIGHT NOW. Just tell Beats Music where you are, what you feel like doing, who you’re with, and what kind of music you’re looking to hear and we’ll take care of the rest by delivering you an endless playlist for your context, be it real or imaginary.
As of this writing, the following are numbers of 'Likes' from their Facebook Page: 6.3 million for Pandora, 4 million for Spotify and 92k for Beats Music. I guess that's good for a service that hasn't launched yet.
- Pandora One cost $36 a year or $3.99 a month; Spotify costs a similar $9.99 a month. ↩
Box Throws in Free 50GBs!
I'm a paid, and happy, user of Dropbox but with the other company Box updating their iOS app to 3.0 and throwing in free 50GBs for life, I might just have to switch on over! That's a steal in my book. I also wouldn't be surprised if Dropbox threw something out there too in the next week or so so keep an eye out. If anything, there's nothing to lose with signing up!
We couldn’t be more excited to announce that today we are releasing our brand new, completely rebuilt Box for iPhone® and iPad® app. And to commemorate this, we are offering 50GB of free storage for life to users who download the app in the next 30 days.
Trade in your Starbucks for Tonx!
If you haven't been on aware, I'm an avid coffee drinker. My morning ritual the past 18 months goes as this:
- I select the 15 grind setting on my Baratza Virtuoso and start it immediately after my Medelco Glass Kettle starts screaming.
- I then pour the hot water into my Hario Buono Kettle, pour my freshly ground beans in my Able Brewing Kone Filter which sits upon a Hario V60 02 Drip Ceramic Filter, aiming for a 27g/360ml water to coffee ratio over 3:00 minutes.
- I pour for 30 seconds to 60g, then wait another 30 seconds for bloom.
- I take a huge whiff of the brew, and then pour another 120g to stopping at 180 and rest for another 20 seconds. Then I top it off reaching 360.
It might seem complicated but believe me, the cup is FRESH and it really isn't that much of a hassle! This past Christmas, I brought the setup to a friend's house and had a great time making coffee for everyone!
So, I'm telling you all this as one of my favorite coffee roasters, just this morning, launched a Starbucks to better coffee exchange program! You read that right! Trade in your Starbucks gift cards for dollar-to-dollar credit towards a Tonx subscription and get the freshest beans delivered straight to your door!
OUR PHILOSOPHY
We Source. We Roast. We Ship. You Brew. At Tonx, we believe great coffee starts with great beans and the best cup of coffee can be made easily at home. That’s why we source from top producers, roast to perfection, and ship our beans within hours of completion. Our brew guides and expert staff will have you brewing the best cup of coffee in no time.
They line up an oddly priced $38 Starbucks gift card to 8 frappucinos, or 11 cappuccinos, or 17 drip coffees, vs 48 cups of "carefully sourced, expertly roasted, super fresh coffee." I couldn't agree more.
Trust me, this isn't a marketing scheme. The coffee that I have received from Tonx over the past year has been some of the best mornings ever! The only benefit for me is that if you use my link, I earn credit towards my coffee habit too.
Tonx has made it really easy for you too! Just head to https://tonx.org/better/new and enter your Starbucks card number and security code, then it will enter a que to which it will be covered to Tonx subscription credit! I'm in the midst of trading in my $25 that I received for Christmas. It's like upgrading your gift!
