I'm all about trying something new when it comes to condiments. I guess with the impending slow down of shipments from the famous Huy Fong Foods, I'll give Thai Sriracha Sauce by Shark a try. Unlike it's popular US counterpart, this one is made in Thailand. It's on Amazon too!
But there are two sides to the story. Some folks (myself included) find that the Huy Fong version—the one that is almost synonymous with sriracha*—is geared toward the palates of American chili-heads who prize heat above all else, rather than the more balanced sweet-hot-sour balance that the Thai original goes for. Pok Pok chef Andy Ricker is a famous detractor of the stuff, preferring Shark brand, a more traditional made-in-Thailand version.
Come on over! I'll be trying this recipe once I get back home… a la mode!
Even though the final result looks more like black mush there’s actually some texture in there between the softened rice and crunchy cookie bits. The taste is described as tiramisu in risotto form which sounds like something we’re definitely about. Although the concept was originally meant to be a fusion between an American classic and a Japanese staple it reminds me more of a Filipino dessert known as Champorado. Either way, this sounds amazing and I’ll be trying it pronto.

If you're a Gen X'er, you have fond memories of blowing into NES cartridges, sliding them into the system at various angles and even wiping the gold plates along the opening. Now, why not just use one as your flask?!
From Ink Whiskey LLC, introducing the Concealable Entertainment Flask on Kickstarter! Priced at an awesome entry level $15 for the Drunk-Hunt flask and various "games" at $20, all the way to $50 for the Gold "cartridge" Legend of Drink, you can own some awesome alcohol paraphernalia. You know I'm in!
Here's the catch. You have to jump on it now! You have less than 30 hours to go! The project has met it's funding by over 300% and ends tomorrow, November 23rd at 7:25pm PST!
Tullamore Dew Irish Whiskey hired [Opperman Weiss][4], a New York ad agency, to create this beautiful commercial featuring the Irish folk song, "A Parting Glass." Directed by Laurence Dunmore of RSA Films and cut by editor Andre Betz of Bug Editorial, here it is in all it's glory. This has to be one of the greatest commercials ever. WOW!
A short film for Tullamore Dew Irish Whiskey finds four young gents winding their way across a grassy hillside on a rainy day, suited up in their finest clothes. The mates end their journey sitting on a stone wall facing a graveyard by a chapel, drinking whiskey and singing the classic Irish folk song “A Parting Glass” in the rain in honor of a friend they are about to say goodbye to.

My wife and I headed down to Liberty Station last Monday to pick up a few Nancy Tillman books at Yellow Book Road. Arriving just within minutes to close, we were politely greeted at the door by Ann and David with my inquires on hand. They knew we were coming because I called twice hoping that they'd wait for us and that they did. You don't find that customer service everywhere. Thanks again guys!
After walking just a few yards, we ran into the newest location for Stone Brewery (at Liberty Station). Come to find out that it's the largest restaurant in San Diego measuring at just over 23,000 square feet and it really is enormous. It's beautiful and since I had my camera handy, I couldn't miss the opportunity to take pictures. My wife was willing to make another Tastemade video but since we had our daughter with us, I hesitated. Don't worry though, we'll back again so stay tuned.
I was fortunate enough a couple of months ago to help kickstart a beautiful idea dubbed Soma. Not only did they re-engineer and rethink the idea of home water filter, the team at Soma pulled through and brought to life an amazing product. I received my Soma glass carafe and filter on Tuesday and love it. I've used it to cook rice and make great tasting coffee. I find myself drinking more water just to watch it filter quickly through the "100% compostable water filter." Here are a few pictures from my Soma and I hope you enjoy my unboxing. As of this writing, their website shows Soma making a public debut in four days. Sign up and check it out!
Straight from the website:
THE WORLD'S MOST INNOVATIVE WATER FILTER
100% compostable filter - Made from all-natural Malaysian coconut shells, vegan silk, and food-based PLA plastic. "There's nothing else like it in the world." Designed by David Beeman - One of the top water filtration experts, with over 30 years of experience creating water formulas for Starbucks, Peet's, and other global brands. Superior taste - Soma's proprietary formula produces the best tasting water. You'll notice a crisp, pure taste you won't find anywhere else.
FINALLY, A GLASS CARAFE
Sleek, minimal design - We eliminated all unnecessary features, resulting in a form that is beautiful because of its elegant simplicity. You'll want to show it off - Soma will be the centerpiece of your next dinner party. Say good bye to hiding your filtered water in the fridge. Drip-free pouring - The beveled edge of the glass carafe results in a perfect pour, every time.
Seriously one of the best commercials ever! http://youtu.be/dxZu-6jewL4
Adelle and I decided to keep it fancy but simple. She knew that I loved ramen so we headed down to Little Italy to enjoy Underbelly. While there, I decided that we could make a quick Tastemade video. It's the first of many and we're just learning the trade. Check it out!
Celebrating month number one is exciting for new parents. Adelle and I also thought this would be a great idea. Who knew that cupcakes, representing each month in celebration of our daughter's special day, would amount to just a little over $270 in the course of a year!!! It was expensive but in the end, we got to gorge on cupcakes, take great photos and celebrate with friends and family! Here are each one of Norah Renée's photos along with her wonderful cupcakes from Sprinkles. We learned that the S'mores cupcake is our favorite, vanilla with sprinkles is a great treat but sometimes too sweet, and that if we invested the $270 dollars in Tesla stock instead, we would have quintupled our cash.

On another note, if you haven't tried out Wolfram Alpha, you should give it a shot. I used the summation formula from Wolfram Alpha for a quick figure.
It's exciting when San Diego makes it into the top ten of anything and this time my beautiful home town squeaked into the top ten best coffee cities in America. This of course comes without surprise that the Travel and Leisure article mentions Bird Rock Coffee Roasters.
While you're here, I also wanted to add Dark Horse Coffee Roasters to the mix. Just a few days ago, I was able to take a trip down to Daniel's lovely shop where he was roasting on site. Let me tell you, the smell was intoxicating! I ordered a satisfying cold brew which was steeped 24 hours in a Toddy. If I didn't come off a mile walk, I would have easily gone for a hot cup where they use a Bee House Coffee Drip for their pour overs. Come check it out and grab a cup!
Verve Coffee Roasters' Colby Barr on the current state of coffee's "pretentious" fans.
On one level the “it’s just coffee” mindset is the old school, World War II, canned coffee for 25 cents with free refills idea — that whole culture of American coffee that it’s an industrialized nation and coffee’s the fuel for it.The other side of it is people that don’t resonate with words like hipster or foodie — it’s something they don’t relate to and if you don’t relate to it, you can be put off by it or be defensive.
On Monday, I made a trip to H-Mart in search for some Cronuts. When I arrived, they had sold out and apparently are selling out within an hour of baking. So instead, I bought a large assortment of pastries from Paris Baguette Cafe and looked forward to a delightful tasting with my wife when she got home from work. After I put our daughter to bed, I came back downstairs to see that the ants already started the party. To date, the ants have infested our family room dining table treats and are up 2-0. I was livid and our for revenge! The kicker is that I didn't even sample anything from the box as I anticipated a fun dinner. I looked up "ant killer" on Amazon and found Terro. With just under 600 reviews and 4.5 stars on average, I was ready to buy but I needed something now. We are subscribers to Amazon Prime, and love it, but it's was still two days away. I went to the local grocery store and bought some Raid Ant traps. The reviews on Amazon are sub par and in actuality pretty poor. I was on a full on war so I ended up buying both.
The Raid solution cost me $8 while the Terro came in under $7. I ordered the Terro on Amazon on Tuesday and it came next day!!! Unbelievable service and I am truly impressed more and more by Amazon. If I would have known, I might have forgone the extra money I spend on the useless Raid trap.
Within seconds, and I mean maybe 10 seconds, the ants were all over the Terro package. The response was tremendous! Continually throughout the day, it kept on attracting everybody while the Raid was the lonely child left in the cafeteria. I'm giving it 5 stars! Solid five stars!
